Why A Website About Bras?

As near as I can tell, I might be the only person on the Internet who gets paid to talk about bras, bras, nothing but bras. And what qualifies me for this lucky distinction? Aside from having a communications degree and marketing background, I’ve got what every woman has – a pair of breasts and a lifelong love-hate relationship with my unmentionables.

I mean, really – the men I know, when they need some new undies, spend about three seconds thinking about it, nip into the nearest Wal-Mart and grab a 3-pack of Jockeys before making a beeline for the hardware section. But women? We’re slaves to our undergear. Every woman I know has, to some degree, a fascination, fixation or downright fetish when it comes to bras and lingerie. It hardly seems fair.

More to the point, there are few resources online when it comes to learning about bras. From an early age, we are told to wear them every day and, in fact, many young girls long for the day when they get to try on their first trainer. And most of us learn about bras the same way we learn about sex – rumor, gossip, advertising and just generally absorbing the cultural signals around us.

But beyond that, these vital everyday accessories for billions of women remain “unmentionables” in general conversation. Women grow up not knowing that bras may cause cancer or hurt their posture or that they’ve probably been wearing the wrong size their whole lives.

And so the idea for BraWise was born – an Internet destination that talks about bras, provides some useful advice and resources, and lets women talk to each other about issues they might not want to discuss with their moms or girlfriends.

So jump in, folks, and let me know what you think. There will be lots of ads on this site and chances to do some shopping, but otherwise BraWise is strictly independent – which means I get to shoot my mouth off without having to worry that the good folks over at Hanes Brands are going to call for my head!

Seriously, though, I’d like BraWise to become your website as much as mine. Share your stories, ask embarrassing questions, suggest article ideas, look at the pretty pictures (ever notice how hard it is to find bra pics that don’t feature size 2s?), chat about new lines and products, rant at the manufacturers, even rant at me (if you must).

In the meantime, I hope this website becomes a starting point for some serious education about bras for all women. I mean, think about our name – isn’t it time we all became a little more brawise?
