The Three Panties In A Basic Panty Wardrobe

I admit it: I’m more likely to buy a new bra than I am to invest in some good underwear.

You read that right: invest.

I recently bought a lovely new summer dress at a great price. I was wearing it one morning when I dropped my kids off at summer camp - and some zealous camp counsellor took my photo, from behind. That photo turned up in the slide show on the final day.

I was horrified.

Not only do the underwear not do me justice, I had a serious case of VPL. (For those unfamiliar, VPL is Visible Panty Lines.) Now, this alone is not the end of the world (at least, not in my book) but the combination of poor fit plus VPL meant that my great summer dress looked … frumpy.

Here’s the truth, fellow females: what you wear underneath makes all the difference in the world to what you wear on top. You can have the nicest outfit in the world and if your underwear does nothing for your assets, the outfit on top won’t fix that. However, with the right inner fashions, your outer fashions will shine - and everyone will think you’ve lost weight.

That alone is worth the cost of new underwear, isn’t it?

So, here’s what is on my list of basic underwear buys so that my inner fashion catches up with my outer fashion:

  1. At least one “all purpose” shapewear garment. I’ll likely go for something that is high-waisted and has a longer leg line. Think Spanx Higher Power or Dr Rey Hi-Waist Step in Long Leg (long name) or Flexees Firm Control Instant Slimmer Hi-Waist Thigh Shaper (I can’t say that without taking a breath in the middle) or even Yummie Tummie Shortie Long Leg Brief. All of these would create that lovely smooth line and great fit in anything I wear over it.
  2. Some new “daily wear” underwear. For this, I’m definitely thinking comfortable cotton. Good fit and great price. Cotton is much more healthy for female anatomy - so that’s what I buy for my “regular” undies. Think St. Eve Stretch Cotton Hi-Cut Brief or Elita Les Essentiels High Cut Brief (a personal favorite). I do sometimes buy microfiber for regular undies. In this case, think Bali Passion for Comfort Stretch Microfiber Hi-Cut Brief.
  3. Some new “pretty” panties for heading out on a date. These don’t have to be thongs in my opinion. However, if you are a fan, I’d check out Hanky Panky. They claim to be the most comfortable thong on the market. For me, I’ll be looking at what Warner’s and Wacoal offer, since I love their bras (and who needs an excuse for a new bra?) I’ll also be looking at Barely There, which make some very pretty panties that I should be able to color coordinate with any of my basic foundations.

My underwear wardrobe has been ignored long enough!
