Pointy Bras Return To The Scene

The trend of the 1950’s and 1980’s has been revived: say hello (again) to the pointy bra for the Spring / Summer fashions of 2010.

The silhouette may be best typified by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell - that conical shaped bra that got the breasts up and out. It’s a radical departure from push up bras that stress cleavage or bras that focus on a more natural shape.

Sales on bras such as the Fantasie Belle or Triumph Doreen are climbing. So, it’s more than just a celebrity fad: women on the street are catching on too.

Eleri Lynn, author of Fashion in Detail: Underwear, says that pointy bras first hit the market in response to the deprivation of the Second World War. The bras were linked to the glamour and sexuality of women like Russell and Monroe. Later, Madonna brought these bras back: Jean Paul Gaultier designed the 80’s version and Madonna took it to her stage act.

Again, the opulence of Madonna’s stage bras came after the infamous “Black Monday” of 1987 and the resulting recession.

Of course, Madonna was also infamous for wearing the bra as outerwear - another major trend for 2010. Designers like Louise Goldin, Jean Paul Gaultier (sound familiar?) and Dolce & Gabbana are all showing conical shaped bras as outerwear.

If you are one of those folks who always wear a minimizer bra, this trend is about working what you’ve got! It’s about being proud of your assets and not hiding them. This trend is an overt (if somewhat exaggerated) celebration of the female form. That can’t be all bad.

While I won’t be picking up a Madonna-style bra (that could let you stab someone without your hands), I think I might just try out a bra that doesn’t try to hide the breasts, but let’s them take center stage.
