Marilyn Munroe’s Bra Sells For $5,200

You’ve probably never worn a contraption like this. It’s called a “sling-strapped” bra and it was worn by none other than Marilyn Monroe. A London auction house sold the garment this past weekend for $5,200.

Apparently, the unidentified bidder came from Hong Kong.

This interesting garment was a predecessor of the modern day Wonderbra, designed to give Monroe lift and separation. The combination of slings and double-cup design ensured that her breasts were pulled up to create just the right cleavage. This contributed to her sexy profile in the 1950’s by enhancing Monroe’s ample assets.

She needed some support too! While her bra size is disputed on a variety of sites - listed as anything from a 34C to a 36D - the one thing for sure is that Monroe did not lack in feminine charms.

Monroe’s bra was a trade secret: the way the straps were placed helped to keep the futuristic garment hidden. In fact, the fit of the bra provided the illusion that she wasn’t wearing one, according to Katie Halford, who designs and sells vintage lingerie.

Munroe became a household name in the 50’s after a string of hit movies that included such classics as “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Some Like It Hot”. Her image as a Hollywood “sexpot” was further reinforced by her pouty lips and those famous breasts. Of course, the bra that helped hold up those breasts - and provided a needed boost - showed that even her curvaceous body required a little help.

It wasn’t just Munroe’s bra that went on sale. Other momentos and personal items - including a fur stole, a personal script and even a phone bill - went on sale in Las Vegas last month. We continue to be fascinated with all things Marilyn, even though she died over 40 years ago.
