Bras For 7 Year Olds?

Turns out that wide-spread protests have caused Swedish supermarket chain Ica to remove bras in their stores – sized for 7-year-olds.

Jenny Nystedt, a mother of 2 children, was disgusted when she found bras with such a small band size. “It is … repulsive to make children into sexual objects in this way,” Nystedt said.

As a mother of 2 myself, I agree with her.

The Ica supermarket chain initially defended the product, saying that the intention was not to sell a bra, but a cute girl’s top. (The latest trend for adults have been bra tops.) While the top has now been withdrawn, Ica continues to defend the item.

Roger Halvarsson, an Ica representative, said the company has a policy to not sell bras to children. When Halvarsson was then asked to define what the difference is between a bra and a top, he struggled. “A top is a short T-shirt with a shoulder strap. [While] this is a designer top, … I must admit that on the picture, it does look like a bra.”

In my opinion, if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck – it’s a duck. So, if it looks like a bra, it’s a bra. This must have been the thought of the Swedish parents who protested the sale of the “designer top”.

Halvarsson said that Ica is reviewing the clothing carried by the chain to ensure that no other items are inappropriate. (This sounds like a much smarter move than releasing inappropriate children’s wear – and then regretting it later.)

This is not the first report of “adult” clothing styles aimed at kids. Swedish clothing firm Ellos withdrew a children’s 2-piece bikini in 2008. It came in sizes small enough for infants as young as 2 months.

At the time, Ellos representative, Per-Olf Gustafsson, said: “Ellos is a family company. We do not want anyone taking offense.”
